Description:

Johann Baptist Homann. Grosser Atlas über die gantze Welt. Nürnberg: Verlegung des auxtoris Gedruckt bey Johann Ernst Adelbuler, 1731.

Folio. Title page, 42 pages of text in German, 14 maps of the celestial sphere, 77 terrestrial maps; all celestial and 73 terrestrial maps hand-colored contemporaneously. Lacking the allegorical frontispiece engraved by Casper Luyken and the portrait of Charles VI in black and white.

This volume contains a fully global collection of maps, including the constellations, both the Copernican and Tychonic models of the orbits, as well as maps of both hemispheres, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Maps of North America include the names of some Native American tribes. Interestingly, the maps are inconsistent as to whether California is an island. The title vignette is a map of the world as seen from above the north pole; in this rendering, California is an island. All maps include emblematic cartouches and ornamented with engravings.

    Dimensions:
  • w 14 x h 22 in
  • Condition:
  • Good. Bound in faded red cloth with faded titling to front cover. Moderate wear, including fraying to corners. Spine largely detached, with remnants of cloth ties to boards. The backs of the majority of maps are marked with a child's drawings, mostly in pencil with some crayon, circa 1880. Very sparse pencil to the maps themselves. Some scattered repairs. Title page missing the lower fore corner, but this does not impact the text.
