BRUCH, MAX. (1838-1920). German composer. AMusQS. (“Max Bruch”). 1p. Oblong 8vo. London, November 4, 1877. In German, “with the friendly remembrance of Max Bruch.” Three measures marked “Adagio” from the second theme of the first movement of Bruch’s Second Violin Concerto, opus 44, written out and signed on the day of the work’s world premiere in London.
A precocious and prolific composer, Bruch wrote his first work at age nine and single-mindedly continued to compose thereafter. His oeuvre includes orchestral suites, symphonies, operas, choral works, lieder, chamber works, and compositions for strings; however, his reputation today rests on a small number of popular works – primarily his Scottish Fantasy, Opus 46 and his two violin concerti, Opus 26 and Opus 44. Composed in 1877, Bruch dedicated his Second Violin Concerto to Spanish violinist Pablo Sarasate who played it at the world premiere in London’s Crystal Palace on November 4, 1877, the day of our quotation.
Darkly written and in near mint condition. Probably the first quotation from this world famous work that Bruch ever offered!
