“Everything we are and everything we do is predicated on a healthy environment. In one’s own body the functioning of a foot, the lungs, or the vascular system are rarely noticed until something goes wrong. Pain serves to alert us that we need to change something - avoid pressure on the foot, stop smoking or eat differently. If an individual ignores pain enough, she or he will suffer a far greater loss in time. When health fails, even the smallest actions become incredibly difficult - life itself becomes increasingly difficult. The Earth is in pain, but it is not only an individual who loses the capacity to live life to its fullest when her suffering is ignored, it is all individuals and all forms of life on our perfect planet. There is no cause more pressing or more vital to our collective ability to thrive than to heed Earth’s cries before it is too late.”
- The Haas Brothers
Playful and provocative, The Haas Brothers have become known for their intriguing, colorful, and wildly imaginative furniture, ornaments, and commissioned artistry closely related to nature, science fiction, and psychedelia. Their visual and material experimentations, based on technological precision, visual intelligence and youthful creativity, have created a signature aesthetic in handcrafted modern design.
Twins Nikolai and Simon Haas, who live and work in Los Angeles are trained as a musician and painter, respectively. In 2010 they opened their collaborative studio, which employs an interdisciplinary focus on fashion, film, music, art, and design. The Haas Brothers design practice is unique; their technical mastery in ceramic production, extensive exploration of materiality and color, and innovative aesthetic sets them apart from other designers.
The arrival of the accretion process, a manifestation of the exploratory nature of their work, is grounded in the sedimentary. Inspired by the protective buildup of coral and sea anemones, the sculptures are evocative of living forms and reflect the ability of the natural world to shape thought and action. Sitting at the intersection of art and design, the accretions are a formal exploration of nature and biomorphism. These works are confounding and intriguing, encouraging viewers to think deeply about their physicality, aesthetic value and function.
The groundbreaking and effortful technique utilized to create the accretions involves applying a brush dipped in porcelain slip and pigment to the surface of a hand-thrown stoneware vase. The process is repeated between five thousand and ten thousand times with gradated pigment, imbuing the work with an appearance of light and depth. This unparalleled craftsmanship demonstrates a purposeful conceptualism, which suggests a merging of the formal and functional.
