Description:

A GOOD RARE .22 BSA TRANSITIONAL IMPROVED MODEL 'D' UNDER-LEVER AIR RIFLE WITH STANDARD MODEL MARKINGS, serial no. S77531,
one of the last produced in 1914, with blued 19 1/4in. barrel (45in. overall) dove-tailed fore-sight, elevating rear-sight, tap action breech marked with the 'piled arms' logo and '2 LOAD', patent number '8246/06' stamped to securing plate, plain air-chamber etched 'THE BSA STANDARD AIR RIFLE .22 BORE' bisected by the 'piled arms' logo over 'THE BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO. LTD. ENGLAND' over 'SOLE MAKERS' (etching browned but quite legible), single pin trigger unit with screw trigger weight adjuster to front of guard and marked 'PAT.30338-10' above the serial number, chequered walnut saw-handled butt-stock inlet with a factory fitted folding peep-sight (Patent 26943/07), ribbed heel, no provision for fore-end and side-catch under-lever stamped with BSA patents, fine condition with much original finish throughout

Provenance: Air rifles of this type were produced between 1913-14 in the serial range 60000-78212 by BSA and almost always are found with the Improved Model D markings. Air rifle production ceased during the First World War, with the new model, The Standard, being launched in 1919 and starting at serial 1, finishing at 55442 in 1935. This rifle may well have still been on BSA's inventory at the end of the war and etched up as a Standard model to make it conform to the new model type, despite the specification of under-lever style and trigger unit being different
