Description:

Mario Sanchez (Cuban / American, 1908-2005). A hand-carved and painted wood panel folk art painting titled "Francisco Marrero's Village." Sanchez, a self-taught artist, presents a naive yet detailed depiction of a bustling Key West, Florida street scene, filled with lively activity. The artwork features key elements such as the "Lindbergh Grocery Store," with signage advertising meats and fancy staples, a small mobile cart labeled "Jack's Crawfish Co.," and scenes of patrons and children playing baseball and flying kites adorned with American and Cuban flags. A prominent feature of the painting is an intersection with street sign "Julia and Whitehead". The scene is set against a backdrop of local architecture, indigenous plant life, and stylized clouds in the sky. The panel is vividly painted and includes carved details that add multi-dimensional depth and texture to the scene. The title and artist's signature are located on the lower right side of the panel. The work is presented in a wood frame.

This piece retains its original label, which states: "MARIO SANCHEZ, Original Woodcarving Created by Mr. Sanchez expressly for the Harris School Auction." It is accompanied by various documents related to the artist, including a book titled "MARIO SANCHEZ: Painter of Key West Memories," published in 1981 by Kathryn Hall Proby and signed by both the author and the artist on the cover page. (Please note: The original pencil study previously sold at Doyle on 11-21-2021, Lot #164.)

Sanchez's work is part of prestigious collections, including those at the Smithsonian, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and The American Folk Art Museum, as well as numerous private collections in Florida and across the world.
